Intercultural Communications
Global economy is deeply changing and influencing government, business, organization and population. This means that all are now part of a global and international network. Communicate effectively with different people from different country and in different languages it’s now fundamental. As business becomes more international, linguistic and cultural knowledge are the bases for each organization which wants to become integrate and succeed in the marketplace. Necessary for travelers or business persons it’s understood other people language, culture, etiquette and taboo. This is all about intercultural communication.
Intercultural communication’s purpose it’s studying and researching about how people communicate and behave, in order to apply new knowledge to real situation. Situation in which people need to communicate with others from different country, which means different culture.
The field of intercultural communication studies its part of communication research, which involved other fields such anthropology, psychology. The role played by culture in influencing human behavior was for the first time underlined by the anthropologist Edward T. Hall in 1959 with his book The silent language. In his book Hall explain about the non-verbal communication in non Western cultures.
By now, modern research focuses on the different communication process in order to describe it, rather than give general theories.
Intercultural communication starts when individuals from different cultural communities are sharing an interaction. Interaction could be intercultural rather than interpersonal when individuals are influenced by the group identity, which determine values, prejudice, language, non-verbal behavior and relational style. It’s possible identify two types of group identity:
- Described identity, description that one person hold true about another person, such ethnic connotation, stereotype
- Avowed identity, which describe the group affiliations that one feels more intensely. Value and practices of a new culture in which a person is assimilated becomes important and the person feel a sense of affiliation
Group identities are important because people use them to communicate. The way how a person communicates with another one from a different culture depends on the ascribed identity, which means the way the other is perceived.
Communication is now considered a product of culture. Considering that each culture has impact on behaviors and each culture has specific character, international communication can cause conflict.
The main issues are: language as a barrier, cultural diversity and ethnocentrism.
Communication appropriates and effectiveness is not based only on the knowledge of grammar and vocabulary of another language. Language could represent a barrier, words as long as phrases are used in different ways. Distinct syntax, expression and structure could bring confusion in intercultural communication. It’s also important understand language pragmatics, such politeness strategies and be sensitive to non verbal communication of other cultures in order to avoid using gestures which might have different meaning in a host culture. Intercultural competitiveness is based on avoiding ethnocentrism, which means that one group or person view itself as natural and correct, so all groups should behave in the same way. Someone who is ethnocentric is not able to adapt to diverse people, which means that can’t communicate. It may be possible evolve from ethnocentrism to ethno relativism trough acceptance and then adaptation. Its important for individuals who wants to communicate across cultures knows that they must understand some of the ways in which cultures diverge, to obtain a competently communication.
